Beyond The Sea’s project is to haul merchant ships, thanks to a kite surfing technology, using wind as the only source of energy.

Automatic and easy folding or unfolding of the kite, automatic dynamic flight, self-stability in flight, autopilot and safety thanks to a software based on AI.

Scientific Committee opinion

Le besoin de réduction d'émissions du monde maritime est manifeste et cette innovation permet d’y apporter une réponse pertinente.

Le système présente des caractéristiques techniques (forme de l’aile, conception, pilotage...) adaptées pour une performance de traction efficiente.

S’il n’y a pas de verrous scientifiques à lever, la validation technique du passage à l’échelle reste à faire, en passant notamment de prototypes de voiles de 25 m2 à des voiles destinées à des cargos, de plusieurs centaines de m2, pilotées en automatique. La tenue des matériaux, notamment du tissu de la voile, et le risque associé à une chute de voile de kite dans l'eau sont des points clés à maîtriser pour un développement réussi.

Enfin, en matière d’externalités, l’innovation ne présente pas de signature négative notable.
