'Team points' are awarded according to the adequacy of the solution with the type of innovations sought by Team for the Planet. They correspond to the analysis of several factors :

  • impact potential: impact average score > 4 => 0,5 point / if > 4,15 => 1 point.
  • global consistency: all average score of the 6 selection criteria > 2,5 => 1 point.
  • the favourite: % of assessments judge the innovation as a top one to act on a global scale against greenhouse gases > 20% => 1 point
  • the targeting: validation of Team for the Planet scope of action higher than 90% => 0,5 point + innovation level of maturity is enough => 0,5 point
  • social acceptability: semantic analysis score of comments > 0 => 0,5 point/ if > 3500 => 1 point

What is the issue addressed?

In order to make roads more durable, the asphalt industry is adding virgin polymers to asphalt. However, this leads to a 20% increase in the carbon footprint, as well as a 20% decrease in production costs, of the already resource and energy intensive process.

How is the problem solved?

Ecopals modified this process and is able to use polymers from non-recyclable plastic stream instead of virgin polymers. The performance of the asphalt is as good as when using virgin polymers and its carbon footprint is reduced. Plastic waste that otherwise would be incinerated or just landfilled at a high cost instead gets a circular purpose.

What is the customer target?

Anybody building roads with a special focus on countries, states, cities and all other public authorities.

How is this solution different?

Instead of using plastic that has other applications, we use plastic with no other purpose. Our decentralized production enables scalability, benefits all stakeholders along the supply chain, and gives the road construction industry an opportunity to decrease its carbon footprint. Moreover, our price advantage ultimately benefits public authorities, who can put tax money to better use.
